One of the main reasons I bought a camera in Japan was because my old Olympus Stylus has been acting up on me for over a year now. I developed 3 random rolls that I had shot over the course of the last two years and most of the shots were blurry and out of focus (I think the problem was with the censor)

I managed to find a couple cool shots here and there on those old rolls, which I will post here.

I’m currently working on a collaboration with Montreal based artist / old friend Chris Robertson of La Presse Du Chat Perdu. Chris and I have known eachother for over half our lives and have been collaborating/struggling/growing in many facets of art, music, journalism, travel, print media, friendship and grilled sandwiches for the majority of that time.

Over at Shirts For A Cure, we’ve been working really hard lately on our Indiegogo campaign to re-release our founder Mark Beemer’s photography book “Stealing Time: 23 Years Of Punk Images”… and I could really use your support!

I was recently asked by the fine folks at my favourite Toronto menswear shop NOMAD to participate in their ongoing mix series. What I love most about Nomad are the timeless styles and lasting quality of their brands. I wanted to create a mix that not only showcased my tastes, but represented that timelessness in the songs. Best of 2012: Billy Hamilton from Silverstein (Episode 33)

Picking a top 5 was tough this year. I think I spent most of the year listening to 3 records that I slept on last year (Banner Pilot, Feist and Bry Webb of Constantines solo record) and haven’t given enough time to records that some of my favourite bands released this year (Propagandhi, Hot Water Music). Anyway, here’s what I’ve got…

1. The Jealous Sound - A Gentle Reminder

I’ve been waiting for this record for close to a decade, and it didn’t disappoint. Their previous full length ‘Kill Them With Kindness’ is a landmark of my teenage years, and while this record is very much so a lot of the same, it stands up to both it’s predecessor and the test of time. I think it’s unbelievable that a band can write a handful of songs that sound like they haven’t missed a beat and of which I can still relate to 10 years later. Added bonus is the solid playing by legendary bassist Nate Mandel of Foo Fighters / Sunny Day Real Estate.

2. Bahamas - Barchords

Bahamas is Toronto solo artist Afie Jurvanen, who previously toured in the backing band for Feist and Jason Collett of Broken Social Scene. I had heard a little buzz around his debut album ‘Pink Strat’ and first saw him perform opening for The Weakerthans. When I picked up ‘Pink Strat’, I didn’t really feel like the record captured the same vibe and mood that the live show did. Needless to say, I was highly anticipating ‘Barchords’ as a follow up. I first heard the bluesy rocker ‘I Got You Babe’ on a friends blog and rushed out to pickup the record. Backed by Weakerthans drummer Jason Tait, ‘Barchords’ is a mix of reverberated sixties pop (hence the album title) and a couple subdued mellow acoustic tunes all of which mostly deal with the loss and lament of a relationship. This record really stuck it out and kept my attention all year.

3. Beach House - Bloom

I kind of slept on all of the hype surrounding ‘Teen Dream’ and took my time getting into Beach House, despite many of my friends telling me to check it out. When I heard talks of a new record, I jumped on it immediately, as I eventually got on board and loved every second of ‘Teen Dream’. ’Bloom’ was one of those records that I would listen to and immediate have the urge to start back at track one and listen again. While I thought it would be tough to top ‘Teen Dream’, I think they did it! Where ‘Teen Dream’ lacks dynamically and sticks mostly to one tempo and tone throughout, ‘Bloom’ really shines in diversity. The record grows on you as you go, as I feel some of the best tracks are in the middle of the record. Some of the melodies are so catchy and familiar that I felt like I was listening to a classic right from the start.

4. Mount Eerie - Clear Moon / Ocean Roar

You never know what you’re going to get from former Microphones frontman Phil Elverum, who has been releasing records under the moniker Mount Eerie for the majority of the decade. With a back catalogue ranging from simple guitar/vocal folk stuff to verging on black metal, each release seems to take a different path sonically. I saw Phil perform on his own back in April while touring in Copenhagen. He was opening for the band Earth which led me to believe he’d be playing some of his heavier material with a full band. He got up on stage and said something along the lines of “Hi, my name is Phil. I’m releasing two albums this year and I’m going to play songs that you’ve never heard from both of them”. He put on a 12 string guitar, plugged into a few effects and a Fender combo and levelled me with vast spacious tones and his classic soft vocals. I saw him perform again in Toronto this fall after both records had been released. This time, he came with a band and performed the songs as they are on these two records. With dark, heavy tones, moody organ and crushing percussion this record is really like nothing I have ever heard before. Fans of somber, heavy and ambient music alike can all find something in these records I think. Personally I think that I preferred the latter ‘Ocean Roar’ record the best of the two, both are extremely interesting and innovative records worth checking out.

5. The Gaslight Anthem - Handwritten

I think it’s safe to say that ‘The 59 Sound’ is one of my favourite records of the past decade. I was a little let down by the follow up ‘American Slang’, but after being blown away by the side project Horrible Crowes record and hearing Gaslight perform a few new songs live, I was really looking forward to this record. It’s clear that these guys are “going for it” so to speak. After building a following in the underground punk scene, they moved on to bigger festivals and caught the attention of major labels, radio networks and heroes to the likes of Bruce Springsteen. With a slick production from legendary producer Brendan O’brien and all the pieces in place, I have no doubt that this record will serve it’s purpose and launch the band to continued commercial success. At first listen, I loved it! I went back and listened a few times and thought that maybe a few of the hooks were a little too easy, and that I had fallen for the obvious. I remember when I first heard the band’s debut ‘Sink Or Swim’ and thinking “Wow! Anyone who hears this band would be a fool not to like it…this band is going to be huge!” After taking it all in, I really do think this record is good, perhaps not great in the way that I hold ‘The 59 Sound’ but I think that most importantly it’s honest, and puts a group of genuine, hard working guys in front of the masses where they belong.

Silverstein is gearing up for the release of their 6th proper full length ‘This Is How The Wind Shifts’ on February 5th through Hopeless Records. Catch them on their US Tour January 25th - March 2nd and find all the dates, album info and listen to a new track at www.silversteinmusic.com

RESTLESS SOUL MIXTAPE SERIES - Volume SIXTEEN

I realize I have fallen a little behind on the mix series once again. This time I feel like I have a semi-legitimate excuse. I recently moved apartments and went several weeks without the internet. I also had an issue with my sound editing software, which was quickly resolved by downloading an update. Alas, I am back and all settled into the new place!

Back in August I made a trip down to what some believe to be the best city in the world: New York City. I would tend to mostly agree with those people. Upon setting foot in lower Manhattan, my head was immediately full of many of the songs on this mix. I realized that I love so many songs about that fine city, share the same sentiments as many of the artists and are drawn to those words and melodies when placed in the geographical backdrop for which the songs were written.

I realize that, while picking a few obvious staples, strayed away from some (cheesy) classics like AC/DC’s “I Feel Safe In New York City” and basically anything by Frank Sinatra.

If you love this city as much as I do, hopefully we share the same feelings about these songs.
