Thanks for the suggestion! I listen to a lot of older tunes and always try to mix a few ones into each mix. I was definitely overdue for an exclusively oldies mix though. Glad you dug it!
Happy Anniversary Restless Souls! This (last) month marks the one year anniversary of the Mixtape Series, thus yielding the 13th volume. I know I am a little late for April, but as I mentioned in my last post, I am catching up.
I have been reading Henry Rollins “Black Coffee Blues” (a gift from my pal Ross) on the tail end of the long European Tour we just completed and something from the prologue jumped out at me. I wanted to share this quote with you, as I feel it directly explains my intentions in sharing mixes with you on this blog.
“Living on the road can be a harrowing experience. The scenery is constantly moving and loneliness can be a hell hound on your trail. Alienation and isolation have followed me my whole life. I can’t think I am the only one out there who feels this way.”
“It’s from the written word that I can speak to you with the most clarity and unguarded honesty. It is the medium I prefer over the rest. In my opinion, it is silent communication and unknown acknowledgment that is best. Like when two people at a record store are both looking through the John Coltrane section and they nod and smile at each other. If that instance could be a language, it would be the one I try to speak every time I write.”
“I rarely went on the road without one of Miller’s books in my backpack. A man I never met kept me company and became my traveling companion and friend.”
I think this mix is a perfect example of why I started making Restless Soul Mixtapes in the first place: to capture the feelings I was experiencing month to month in the music that was guiding me along that month. This mix features music, new and old, that really captures the peaks and valleys of how I felt last month. That alienation and isolation that Henry speaks of is very real and these are the songs that became my traveling companion. I hope that you can relate. Enjoy.

My apologies for slacking big time on the mixes the last couple of months. I assure you I will pull up my slacks and make up for the lost time in the coming weeks. I already have #13 almost ready to go and will get #14 up before the end of May as well!
This edition of Restless Soul Mixtape Series is a collection of some of my favourite Motown, Doo-wop and Oldies tracks. While a few of the tracks (take ‘Love Shack’ for instance) are newer than others and are not Motown in the slightest, I think this is a good collection of jams. Enjoy!
